Are you a Jane Austen fan? Tune in on the newest BBC series “Sanditon” airing on BBC First, starting on Sunday th 26th of January.

Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire. In the presbytery in Steventon, Jane Austen had her real education: she read her father’s books; works on history, poetry and lots of novels. Jane always had a lively imagination. In 1800, she followed her family to Bath. After her father’s death, she moved with her mother and sister to Southampton in 1806. As early as 1816, Jane Austen showed the first signs of an unknown disease. In May 1817, Jane was taken to Winchester by her brother James. Jane Austen died in Winchester on July 18, 1817. She was only 41. Jane Austen was buried at Winchester Cathedral on July 24th.

Sanditon

Jane Austen started on this novel in January 1817 and first called it The Brothers. She later changed it into Sanditon. She completed eleven chapters before she had to stop in mid-March 1817 due to her illness. She unfortunately died a couple of months later.

Because it’s an unfinished book by a famous writer and that she did completed setting the scene for Sanditon, it has been a favourite of “continuators” – later writers who try to complete the novel within Austen’s vision while emulating her style. The BBC serie is also a possible version of how the story could have finished.

Story

This once sleepy fishing village is transforming into a fashionable spa resort. Changing alongside it is the impulsive and unconventional Charlotte Heywood, who swaps her quiet rural home for the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make.

The plot twists and turns as it exposes the hidden agendas of characters whose fortunes depend on Sanditon’s commercial success. People such as the visionary entrepreneur Tom Parker, mixed-race heiress Miss Lambe, and charismatic but complicated Sidney Parker. Follow Charlotte’s journey to discover herself – and find love on her own terms.
